EXPERIMENT DESCRIPTION
================================================================================
This experiment provides a comprehensive understanding of Path Loss in
wireless mobile communication systems. Path Loss represents the reduction
in power density (attenuation) of an electromagnetic wave as it propagates
through space from the transmitter to the receiver.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
--------------------
Upon completion of this experiment, students will be able to:
1. Calculate Received Power (Pr) based on transmitter parameters and distance
2. Determine Path Loss Exponent (n) for different propagation environments
3. Analyze the impact of Carrier Frequency (fc) on signal propagation
4. Evaluate Receiver Antenna Height (hRx) effects on received signal strength
5. Study Base Station (BS) Antenna Height (hTx) optimization strategies
KEY PARAMETERS:
---------------
- Transmitter Power (TxPow): Power output of the transmitting antenna (dBm)
- Path Loss Exponent (n): Environment-dependent attenuation factor (typically 2-6)
- Carrier Frequency (fc): Operating frequency of the communication system (GHz)
- Receiver Antenna Height (hRx): Height of the receiving mobile antenna (m)
- Transmitter Antenna Height (hTx): Height of the base station antenna (m)
- Reference Distance (d0): Baseline distance for path loss calculation (m)
- Distance (d): Separation between transmitter and receiver (m)
PATH LOSS MODEL:
----------------
The experiment utilizes the Log-Distance Path Loss Model:
PL(d) = PL(d0) + 10 × n × log₁₀(d/d0) + Xσ
Where:
PL(d) = Path loss at distance d (dB)
PL(d0) = Path loss at reference distance d0 (dB)
n = Path loss exponent
Xσ = Gaussian random variable representing shadow fading (dB)
TYPICAL PATH LOSS EXPONENTS:
----------------------------
Environment | Path Loss Exponent (n)
------------------------------------|------------------------
Free Space | 2.0
Urban Area (Cellular) | 2.7 - 3.5
Shadowed Urban | 3.0 - 5.0
Indoor (Line of Sight) | 1.6 - 1.8
Indoor (Obstructed) | 4.0 - 6.0
Factory (Obstructed) | 2.0 - 3.0
