Download the page as pdf using pandoc (as an option in case of having front matter)

The pdf that are created for every markdown file ignores the instructions given in the front matter.

I would like to download a pdf for every page or from the whole book styled following the instructions I have from the front matter in the markdown document , as Pandoc does.

I usually do it separately , and produce a pdf book using pandoc but it will be really cool if this is integrated here.

Hi @leilaicruz - I'm not quite sure what you mean. Can you point to an example of this behavior in pandoc?

Also just a note, I doubt that jupyter book will directly support pandoc, as this would be a large departure from our current build system

Hi @choldgraf is just how pandoc is used to render a pdf from a markdown file/s . The specifities of the render could be added through a yaml front matter in the markdown file.

So I was wondering if this could be integrated in Jupyter Book. Basically, I would like that the pdf from the published html file , is built via Pandoc . So, the built pdf will show the specificities defined the front matter (if any) of the markdown file .

does that make sense?

@leilaicruz perhaps it is worth running through your current workflows to better understand what you're proposing here. I think you're asking to go from md:myst source files in two pathways:

1. myst:md -> html (via jupyter-book -- sphinx backend)
2. myst:md -> pdf (via pandoc) with a special pandoc render settings in the yaml header of myst:md
3. integrate the pdf outputs into the html project (via copying the asset) and make them available as is built from Pandoc

Is that what you're proposing? Perhaps you could post a sample source file with what you use for pandoc settings.

We are also working on improvements to pdf via LaTeX (#1167) soon and will be looking at support for --individualpages next.

Markdown document

I have this front matter in all my md:myst files from the jupyter_book , because I sometimes generate my own pdf using pandoc . Yet, I would like to do it if possible through also jupyter_book, export the webpage as a nice pdf formatted with these instructions , which is basically latex.
Perhaps what it is posted in #1167 is already a way out to solve this problem.
