Decentralized Discord — Design Conversation

User: Think about how to do a decentralized/distributed Discord. Something with something like bittorrent and a DHT at its center

Decentralized Discord: Core Architecture Sketch

The fundamental challenge: Discord is a real-time group chat + voice system built around "servers" (communities). Decentralizing it means replacing the central authority with a P2P overlay while preserving the UX people expect — persistent channels, presence, roles/permissions, and low-latency voice.

Key Building Blocks

Identity: Public key pairs as identity. Your "account" is a keypair. Display names, avatars, etc. are signed metadata you publish. No central auth server — you prove you're you by signing messages. Think Nostr's model here.

Server/Guild Discovery — DHT: A Kademlia-style DHT (like BitTorrent's mainline DHT) serves as the global index. A "server" is identified by its public key hash. The DHT maps:

  • server_id → set of bootstrap peers currently online for that server
  • user_id → routing hints (IP:port, relay nodes)

Message Transport & Persistence — Gossip + CRDTs: Within a server, messages propagate via a gossip protocol among currently-connected peers. Channel history is a log-structured CRDT (append-only, causally ordered via vector clocks or Lamport timestamps). Peers joining late sync missing history from peers who have it — essentially like a BitTorrent swarm per-channel, where the "pieces" are message ranges.

Permissions/Moderation: This is the hardest part. The server creator's keypair is the root of trust. They sign role assignments. Bans, channel permissions, etc. are a signed, replicated policy document — a capabilities chain. Peers enforce locally (they can refuse to relay messages from banned users), but you can't prevent a banned node from reading if it has peers willing to share.

Voice/Streaming: WebRTC peer-to-peer for small groups. For larger channels, a Selective Forwarding Unit (SFU) role that volunteer peers take on — essentially a mini media relay. Peers with good bandwidth self-nominate or get elected.

The Hard Problems

  • Offline persistence — If everyone in a server goes offline, history is gone unless some peers are "always-on" (effectively volunteer servers, like IPFS pinning). You almost inevitably end up with semi-dedicated nodes.
  • Spam/Sybil resistance — Without a central authority, you need something like invite-only servers, proof-of-work for joins, or a web-of-trust model.
  • Consistency of moderation state — Two moderators issue conflicting actions. You need a conflict resolution strategy (last-writer-wins, or a consensus protocol among mod-tier nodes).
  • NAT traversal — Same as any P2P system. STUN/TURN, hole punching, relay nodes.

Closest Existing Projects

  • Matrix/Element — Federated (not fully decentralized), but tackles many of the same problems. Servers replicate room state.
  • Briar — P2P encrypted messaging over Tor, very privacy-focused, no DHT though.
  • Jami (GNU Ring) — P2P voice/video/chat using OpenDHT.
  • Session — Decentralized messenger built on a Lokinet onion routing + service node network.
  • Tox — P2P encrypted messaging with DHT for peer discovery.

User: So, I'm thinking a room/board is at a point on the DHT and so has an address. Rooms are owned by individuals and they should be able to set up moderation plans. For example, maybe they promote certain individuals to moderators. The one admin could promote and demote. A sort of ACL would be implied although I'm not sure how to do that dynamically while distributed

Right, this is the crux of the problem. Let me think through it.

The ACL Problem in a Decentralized System

A room at a DHT address is clean — room_id = H(creator_pubkey + room_name + nonce) or similar. The creator's pubkey is the root of trust. That's straightforward.

The hard part: how do peers enforce a dynamic ACL when there's no central authority to query?

Approach: Signed Authority Chain

Think of it as a mini blockchain/log — but not really a blockchain, more of a signed append-only authority log:

  1. The creator signs the genesis record: {room_id, creator_pubkey, initial_policy}
  2. Every ACL mutation is a signed record appended to this log:
    • GRANT_MOD(user_X) signed by creator
    • BAN(user_Y) signed by someone with mod role
    • REVOKE_MOD(user_X) signed by creator
  3. Every peer in the room replicates this authority log (it's small — just permission changes, not messages). To validate any action, a peer replays the log to derive the current ACL state.

Why This Works (Mostly)

  • Verifiable — any peer can independently verify every entry's signature and that the signer had authority at that point in the log.
  • Creatorship is unforgeable — only the creator's key can issue top-level grants.
  • Delegation is bounded — mods can only do what the policy says mods can do.

The Ordering Problem

Here's where it gets nasty. Two mods simultaneously issue conflicting actions:

  • Mod A bans User Z
  • Mod B grants User Z a role

Without a total order, peers could diverge. Options:

  1. Lamport timestamps + deterministic tiebreak (e.g., lower pubkey wins). Simple, mostly sufficient. Mods occasionally get surprised.
  2. Creator is the sequencer — ACL changes only take effect when the creator (or a designated "sequencer" node) countersigns and assigns a sequence number. Downside: creator must be online, or you buffer changes.
  3. Quorum among mods — heavier, but if you want democratic moderation, mods vote and a threshold confirms. Basically lightweight BFT among a small known set.

Option 2 is probably the pragmatic sweet spot for most rooms — the creator is a soft authority anyway, and most rooms are small enough that they're online often. You can have a fallback: if the creator is offline for >N minutes, mods can act unilaterally and the creator reconciles on return.

Revocation Is The Real Beast

Promoting is easy. Demoting is hard in distributed systems because the demoted node can just... ignore it and keep signing things.

The defense: peers enforce locally. Once a REVOKE_MOD(X) appears in the authority log, all honest peers reject subsequent actions signed by X-as-mod. The revoked mod can scream into the void, but nobody relays or stores their mod actions.

This means the authority log must propagate faster than mod actions, or you get a window of confusion. Prioritizing authority log gossip over message gossip helps here.

The hash chain means you can't silently drop entries — it's tamper-evident like a git history.

User: "Think of it as a mini blockchain/log — but not really a blockchain, more of a signed append-only authority log:" but "where" is the log? A bitcoin ledger exists on many disks. Where would this ledger be? On the members machines in a tamperproof ledger?

Yes, exactly — every peer in the room holds a copy. It's replicated the same way messages are: gossip among room members.

It's tamper-evident (hash chain) rather than truly tamper-proof. The distinction matters:

  • Tamper-proof (blockchain): consensus among untrusted parties prevents forks. Expensive.
  • Tamper-evident (what we want): if anyone alters history, the hashes break and other peers reject it. Cheap.

This works because the trust model is different from Bitcoin. In Bitcoin, you don't trust anyone. Here, you already trust the creator's key as root authority. You don't need proof-of-work or BFT consensus — you just need to verify signatures chain back to that root.

So What Prevents Forks?

A rogue mod could try to create a fork of the authority log — show different versions to different peers. But:

  • Every entry has prev_hash, so peers can detect diverging chains
  • The longest chain signed by the highest authority wins. Creator-signed entries always trump mod-signed entries.
  • When two peers connect and their authority logs diverge, they reconcile: find the fork point, keep the branch with higher authority (or earlier timestamp at equal authority)

What If Everyone Goes Offline?

Same problem as message history — if all peers leave, the log is gone. Realistic options:

  1. At least one "archiver" peer stays up — could be the creator running a lightweight always-on node (a Raspberry Pi, a VPS, whatever). Not truly decentralized but practical.
  2. DHT-stored snapshots — periodically, the current authority log state gets published to the DHT itself. Peers joining later can bootstrap from the DHT even if no current members are online. Problem: DHT entries expire, and you're trusting DHT storage nodes.
  3. Accept it — small ephemeral rooms just die. That's okay for many use cases.

Realistically, any room that cares about persistence will have at least one semi-permanent node. Matrix works this way in practice — "decentralized" but every room has homeservers that stay up.

User: "So What Prevents Forks?". I'm not sure I understand the problem. The address (key in the DHT) is owned by the main administrator that created it. In a sense, every member has a fork. But only the administrator has the creds to modify anything substantial including member lists, ACLs, etc.

Claude:

You're right, I overcomplicated it. If the creator's key is the sole authority for structural changes, there's no fork problem — there's only one valid signer for the things that matter.

A mod can ban someone, sure, but that authority is delegated and revocable. If two mods conflict, the creator's next signed entry resolves it definitively. Peers just reject anything that doesn't trace back to a valid signature chain rooted at the creator.

The "fork" scenario I described only arises if you try to make moderation democratic/distributed. If you don't — if the creator is the single source of truth for the ACL — it's just a signed log that everyone replicates and validates. Simple.

So the model is really:

  • Creator signs ACL changes → peers replicate and enforce
  • Mods get delegated powers → but their actions are only valid while the creator's log says they're mods
  • Every peer validates independently → no trust in other peers, only in the signature chain

It's closer to a signed RSS feed of policy updates than anything blockchain-like. The creator publishes, everyone subscribes and verifies.

The only real question left is latency — if the creator revokes a mod, there's a propagation window where some peers haven't seen it yet. But that's a minor consistency gap, not a structural flaw. Same as DNS propagation delay, effectively.

User: Is there a way to search for communities? Or would this be something were you would need to get a link to the room somewhere?

Claude:

Both, really. The DHT gives you a mechanism for each.

Link/invite model is the easy one — you share the room's DHT key out-of-band (URL, QR code, posted on a website, whatever). This is how most Discord servers actually grow today anyway. That just works natively.

Search is harder because DHTs are key-value stores, not search engines. You look up by exact key, not by keyword. Options:

  1. Opt-in directory nodes — rooms that want to be discoverable publish metadata (name, description, tags) to well-known index nodes. Essentially volunteer search servers. Decentralized purists hate this but it's practical. Think of it like torrent tracker sites — BitTorrent is decentralized but everyone still uses search sites to find things.
  2. DHT keyword indexing — store entries at H("tag:gaming"), H("tag:music"), etc. A room opts into discovery by publishing its room key under relevant tag hashes. Peers searching for "gaming" look up that hash and get a list of room keys. Crude but fully decentralized. Problems: spam, no relevance ranking, stale entries.
  3. Curated lists / web of trust — users you follow can publish lists of rooms they recommend. Your client aggregates these. Organic, social discovery. No central index needed.

Realistically you'd end up with a combination: option 2 for basic decentralized discovery, option 1 emerging naturally as the ecosystem matures (someone builds a search site), and option 3 for quality filtering.

The spam problem with option 2 is significant though — anyone can publish garbage under popular tags. You'd need some cost to publish (proof-of-work per listing, or only listings signed by keys with enough "reputation" get shown). That's a rabbit hole.

Which layer interests you most to flesh out further?


User: "well-known index nodes" means "not distributed"

Claude:

Yep, exactly. That's why I said purists hate it.

Option 2 is the only truly distributed answer. And you could make it less crude:

Multi-level keyword hashing — instead of just H("tag:gaming"), also store at H("tag:gaming:fps"), H("tag:gaming:mmorpg"), etc. Hierarchical taxonomy, all on the DHT. Room creators publish to as many tag-keys as they want.

Spam mitigation without centralization:

  • Proof-of-work per listing — to publish your room under a tag, you must include a hashcash-style PoW token. Makes bulk spam expensive. Legitimate rooms pay the cost once.
  • Peer voting on the DHT — entries at a tag-key include a signed upvote/downvote tally from visitors. Clients sort by net votes. Gaming this requires many keypairs + PoW per vote, which raises the cost.
  • Age weighting — longer-lived listings with consistent peer activity rank higher. Fly-by-night spam rooms have no real peers, so they look dead on inspection.

Freshness problem — DHT entries expire. Rooms need to periodically re-publish their listings. This is actually a feature: dead rooms naturally fall out of search results. Active rooms have online peers who re-publish automatically.

So the search index is the DHT, just with a convention for how tag keys are structured. No special nodes, no centralization. It's just key-value pairs like everything else.

It's not going to be Google-quality search, but "browse by tag + sort by activity" is honestly how most Discord discovery works anyway.


User: results in a very rudimentary search capability.

Claude:

True. But is that actually a problem?

Think about how people actually find Discord servers today: Reddit posts, Twitter links, YouTube descriptions, Google searches, word of mouth. Discord's built-in discovery is a relatively late addition and most communities grew without it.

A decentralized system could lean into that reality rather than fight it. The DHT tag search is a "good enough" browse-by-category for casual discovery. The real growth vectors are the same as they've always been — links shared on the open web.

And here's the thing: nothing stops someone from building a search website that crawls the DHT tags and indexes them properly. That's not part of the protocol — it's a service built on top of it. Multiple competing search sites could exist. They're centralized individually but replaceable and redundant. If one goes down or starts censoring, another pops up. Like torrent search sites.

So the protocol provides:

  • Invite links (core, always works)
  • Basic tag browsing via DHT (decentralized, crude)

The ecosystem provides:

  • Rich search via third-party indexers (centralized per-site, but competitive and replaceable)

That layering feels right to me. Keep the protocol simple, let the market solve the UX problem on top.

Or do you think discoverability needs to be a first-class protocol concern?


User: okay. Maybe I'll work on it.

Claude:

It's a solid project. The core primitives are pretty clean:

  • DHT for routing/discovery
  • Keypairs for identity and authority
  • Signed authority log for ACL
  • Gossip for message propagation

If I were starting, I'd prototype the authority log + message gossip layer first — that's the novel part. The DHT and crypto are well-trodden (libp2p, OpenDHT, or even just mainline BitTorrent's DHT as a starting point).

User: I'm assuming any roles available for an ACL would be static and baked into the app?

Claude:

Simplest approach, yes. A fixed set like OWNER | MOD | MEMBER | BANNED covers 90% of use cases and makes the authority log validation straightforward — every peer knows exactly what each role can do.

The alternative is user-defined roles with capability bitmasks — like Discord's actual permission system. CAN_BAN | CAN_DELETE | CAN_INVITE | CAN_PIN etc. The owner creates custom roles as bundles of capabilities, assigns them to users. More flexible, but:

  • Authority log validation gets more complex — peers must evaluate capability checks, not just role checks
  • The role definitions themselves become part of the signed authority log
  • More surface area for bugs and edge cases

I'd start with static roles. You can always extend to capability-based later by making the static roles just pre-defined capability bundles. The log structure doesn't really change — you're just making the role field richer.


User: Curious how you would approach capabilities in a distributed manner?

Claude:

The owner defines capabilities as a signed document in the authority log — it's just another entry type.

Then GRANT_ROLE(user_X, "helper") is a subsequent signed entry as before.

Peers validate actions by:

  1. Replay the authority log to derive current role definitions + assignments
  2. When user X tries to delete a message, check: does X's current role include CAN_DELETE?
  3. If yes, relay the action. If no, drop it.

The capability definitions live in the same signed hash chain as everything else. Owner changes what "helper" means? New DEFINE_ROLE entry, same role name, updated capabilities. Peers pick up the latest definition.

The subtle part: what happens to actions taken under the old definition?

Say "helper" had CAN_BAN yesterday, owner removes it today. User X banned someone yesterday while they validly held that capability. Is that ban still in effect?

Two options:

  1. Actions survive — the ban was valid when issued, it stands. Simple, predictable.
  2. Actions inherit — removing CAN_BAN from the role retroactively invalidates bans issued by that role. More "correct" but peers now have to re-evaluate historical actions when role definitions change. Gets expensive.

I'd go with actions-survive. If the owner wants to undo a specific ban, they issue an explicit UNBAN — which they can always do as owner. Keeps the log evaluation a simple forward scan.


User: Can it be done from an app that runs totally in the browser? So you can serve it but once it's running, it doesn't need the server anymore?

Claude:

Mostly yes, with caveats.

What works in-browser:

  • Crypto (keypair generation, signing, verification) — WebCrypto API handles all of it
  • WebRTC data channels for peer-to-peer messaging — this is how the gossip layer would work
  • IndexedDB for local storage of authority logs and message history
  • The whole UI obviously

The problem: bootstrapping and NAT traversal

WebRTC requires a signaling step before peers can connect — they need to exchange SDP offers/answers to establish the connection. That exchange needs some channel to happen over. Once connected, peers are fully P2P. But that first handshake needs help.

Also, WebRTC uses STUN/TURN for NAT traversal. STUN is lightweight (just tells you your public IP), but TURN relays traffic when direct connection fails. Both are servers.

So you need minimal infrastructure:

  • A signaling server (can be very dumb — just relays the initial handshake messages, like a matchmaker)
  • A STUN server (public ones exist freely)
  • TURN as fallback (this one's expensive if heavily used)

The DHT problem: traditional DHTs use raw UDP/TCP. Browsers can't do that. You'd need a WebRTC-based DHT overlay — libp2p has work on this (js-libp2p with WebRTC transport). It's functional but the peer count needed for a healthy DHT is a real bootstrapping challenge.

Realistically: the app runs in the browser, all the logic is client-side, but you need a thin signaling/STUN service running somewhere. Once peers find each other, the server is out of the loop. It's "serverless" in spirit but not quite "zero infrastructure."

A service worker could even keep the app alive in the background for message receiving, though browsers throttle that aggressively.


User: Can you write STUN and TUN in javascript and have it run in a browser? And I don't mean the browser of two people trying to connect. I mean, a third browser?

Claude:

STUN from a browser — sort of. STUN is just a simple request/response protocol (tell me my public IP:port). But the reason STUN works is that the server has a known public address and is directly reachable on a UDP port. A browser can't listen on a raw UDP port. So even if you implemented the STUN protocol logic in JS, the browser can't fulfill the role a STUN server plays in the network.

TURN — same fundamental problem, worse. TURN relays raw UDP/TCP streams. A browser can't accept arbitrary inbound connections from the internet.

But. A third browser can act as a signaling relay and a limited data relay over WebRTC. The flow:

  1. Browser C connects to both A and B via WebRTC (already established connections)
  2. A wants to connect to B but can't directly
  3. A sends its SDP offer to C over their existing data channel
  4. C forwards it to B over their existing data channel
  5. B responds through C
  6. A and B attempt direct WebRTC connection
  7. If direct connection fails, C continues relaying data between A and B over its two data channels

That's not STUN/TURN in the protocol sense, but it's functionally equivalent — C is a relay peer. This is basically what libp2p's circuit relay does.

So the answer: you can't run real STUN/TURN in a browser, but you can build an application-level relay that solves the same problem. Any well-connected peer becomes a volunteer relay node. The cost is latency (two hops instead of one) and bandwidth on the relay peer.

The bootstrapping problem remains though — the very first peers in the network need some way to find each other. That's where one publicly reachable endpoint is hard to fully eliminate.


User: I can't run a listener in my browser using javascript?

Claude:

No. Browsers sandbox you from raw socket access. You can't bind to a port and listen for inbound TCP or UDP connections. The browser security model fundamentally prevents it.

Your outbound options are: HTTP(S) fetch, WebSocket, WebRTC, and that's about it. All of them are initiated outward — you can't accept unsolicited inbound connections.

WebRTC is the closest thing to a listener, but it still requires the signaling exchange to happen first through some other channel before the connection establishes.

This is the one hard wall for a fully browser-based decentralized system. You always need at least one non-browser endpoint reachable at a known address for bootstrapping. After that, the WebRTC relay mesh can take over.


User: Are there ways nat traversal can be done with all browsers that know about each other?

Claude:

Yes, if they already know about each other — meaning they already have WebRTC data channels open — then they can help each other connect to new peers without any external server.

WebRTC has ICE (Interactive Connectivity Establishment) built in. When two browsers try to connect, ICE tries multiple strategies automatically:

  1. Direct connection — works if at least one peer has a permissive NAT or is on the same network
  2. STUN-assisted — peers discover their public IP:port and try to hole-punch through their NATs simultaneously

The thing is, peers can learn their public IP:port from each other if they're already connected to a mutual peer. Browser C is connected to both A and B. C can tell A "here's how B looks from the outside" and vice versa. That's essentially what STUN does, but done at the application layer by a peer you're already connected to.

Hole punching then works if both NATs are cooperative (not symmetric NATs). A and B simultaneously send packets to each other's public IP:port, and the NATs let the responses through because they look like replies to outbound traffic.

When it fails: symmetric NATs (common on mobile carriers) rewrite the port per-destination, so the port C observes isn't the port B would see. In that case, you're back to relaying through C.

So the realistic picture: a well-connected mesh of browsers can handle most NAT traversal themselves. The percentage that falls back to relaying depends on the NAT types involved — maybe 10-20% of connections need a relay in practice.

The remaining hard problem is still just the initial bootstrap: how does the very first peer find anyone?


User: DHY

Claude:

DHT? As in, use the DHT itself for bootstrapping?

The chicken-and-egg problem: you need to connect to a peer to access the DHT, but you need the DHT to find peers. At least one well-known entry point has to exist somewhere — a hardcoded address, a DNS record, something.

Even BitTorrent has hardcoded bootstrap nodes (router.bittorrent.com, dht.transmissionbt.com, etc.). Fully unavoidable.

But that bootstrap node can be extremely minimal — literally just hands you a few peer addresses and you never talk to it again. It doesn't need to stay up permanently either, as long as the DHT mesh is healthy enough that peers can find each other through the network once they're in.

You could even have a list of fallback bootstrap endpoints so there's no single point of failure. Any long-running peer could volunteer as a bootstrap node just by being listed.


User: How does a magnet link work?

Claude:

A magnet link is just a URI containing the info hash — the hash of the torrent's metadata. Something like:

magnet:?xt=urn:btih:abc123...

When your client opens it:

  1. It computes the DHT key from that info hash
  2. Queries the DHT for peers who have announced themselves under that key
  3. Connects to those peers
  4. Downloads the actual torrent metadata (file names, piece hashes, etc.) from them first
  5. Then downloads the actual content

There's no .torrent file involved. The DHT is the lookup mechanism. The info hash is the address.

This maps directly to your room concept — a room key is essentially a magnet link. You share it, the client looks it up on the DHT, finds peers in that room, connects, syncs the authority log and message history.


User: "2. Queries the DHT for peers who have announced themselves under that key" <- doesn't that answer your question? How to bootstrap the connection with DHT?

Claude:

You're right — but the question is one level deeper. To query the DHT, you have to already be in the DHT. Your client needs to know the IP:port of at least one existing DHT node to send that first query to.

BitTorrent solves this with hardcoded bootstrap nodes. Your client ships with a list of known addresses. It contacts one, joins the DHT, and from then on it can find anything by hash.

So the bootstrap problem isn't "how do I find a room" — the DHT solves that. It's "how do I join the DHT in the first place." And the answer is always a small hardcoded list of entry points. There's no way around that first contact.

But as you said earlier — once the app is served and running, that initial bootstrap node doesn't need to be the same server that served the app. It could be any publicly reachable peer. And you only need it once per session.


User: "To query the DHT, you have to already be in the DHT." Again, How does this work with a magnet link? "bootstrap nodes" only come into play after I have the torrent. How does a magnet link get me the torrent?

Claude:

You're right, I'm conflating two things. Let me restate.

Your BitTorrent client, when it first installs, connects to bootstrap nodes and joins the DHT. It stays in the DHT as long as it's running. That's a one-time thing at application startup, not per-torrent.

When you click a magnet link, your client is already in the DHT. It just does a lookup by the info hash and finds peers. No new bootstrapping needed.

So for your app: the browser joins the DHT once when the app loads (using a few hardcoded bootstrap addresses). After that, any room key is just a DHT lookup — same as a magnet link. The bootstrap is per-session, not per-room.

That's what you were saying and I was overcomplicating it.


User: Your BitTorrent client, when it first installs, connects to bootstrap nodes and joins the DHT.

Heh. I never knew this. I thought it didn't reach out until it got a magnet link and then someone broadcast

Claude:

Nope — the client joins the DHT immediately on startup and stays connected as a participant. It maintains a routing table of other DHT nodes, responds to queries from other peers, and keeps itself alive in the network. It's a full participant in the distributed hash table whether you're downloading anything or not.

That's actually what makes the DHT work — millions of always-on BitTorrent clients forming the backbone of the network. Every client is both a user and a node.

Which is actually great news for your project. Same model: user opens the app, app joins the DHT, user is now a node. The more users running the app, the healthier the network. A magnet-link-style room key just works because the client is already in the network and ready to query.


User: Can I piggyback off the bittorrent DHT?

Claude:

Technically yes — the mainline BitTorrent DHT is open. Anyone can join it and store/retrieve values using the BEP 44 extension (arbitrary data storage, not just torrent peers).

But practically, it's a bad idea:

  • Browser problem again — the mainline DHT runs over raw UDP. Browsers can't speak it.
  • Abuse of shared infrastructure — you'd be using millions of BitTorrent nodes to store your chat room metadata. The BT community wouldn't love that.
  • No control — you can't extend the protocol, add custom record types, tune TTLs, or change replication behavior. You're at the mercy of someone else's network.

Better approach: run your own DHT using the same Kademlia algorithm, but over WebRTC data channels. Same design, your own namespace, your own rules. js-libp2p already has a Kademlia DHT implementation that works over WebRTC transports.

You just need your own small set of bootstrap nodes instead of piggybacking on BitTorrent's.


User: yeah. okay. But I how do the first 2 people that bring up the app (in their browser or otherwise) find the DHT? If I run a well know bootstrap node, it's not decentralized. If I piggyback off of bittorrent, it can't be attacked

BitTorrent has router.bittorrent.com hardcoded in every client. That's a centralized bootstrap node. Nobody considers BitTorrent centralized because of it. The bootstrap node is a phone book, not an authority. It doesn't control anything — it just introduces you to other peers. After that, you never need it again.

Your app would be the same. Hardcode a few bootstrap addresses. If one goes down, the others work. And here's the key: once the network is large enough, any long-running peer is a valid bootstrap node. You can publish community-maintained lists of known peers. Users can add custom bootstrap nodes in settings. The hardcoded list is just the starting set.

The attack surface is narrow: if all bootstrap nodes go down and you have zero cached peers from a previous session, you can't join. But:

  • Cache known peers locally between sessions — next launch you skip bootstrap entirely and reconnect to peers you already know
  • Multiple independent bootstrap nodes run by different people in different jurisdictions
  • DNS-based peer discovery as another fallback (TXT records pointing to peer addresses, multiple domains)

It's the same "problem" every decentralized network has and it's basically a solved problem in practice. Total decentralization of the bootstrap is impossible — you always need that first introduction. But it's the thinnest possible point of centralization and it controls nothing.


User: Okay. Why not fallback to bittorrent since it's established

That's actually a solid fallback strategy. Not as the primary DHT, but as a bootstrap-of-last-resort.

If your own bootstrap nodes are all down, the client could:

  1. Join the BitTorrent mainline DHT (would need a non-browser helper or a WebSocket-to-UDP bridge for browser clients)
  2. Look up a well-known hash — say H("myapp-bootstrap-peers")
  3. Get a list of your app's actual DHT nodes from there
  4. Join your own DHT using those nodes
  5. Disconnect from the BitTorrent DHT

You're using BitTorrent as a bootstrap discovery mechanism, not as your operating infrastructure. Quick in, get peer addresses, get out. Hard to attack because you'd have to take down the entire BitTorrent DHT, which is essentially impossible.

The browser limitation is the main friction — you'd need either a native helper process or a publicly reachable WebSocket-to-UDP bridge to talk to the BT DHT. But that bridge itself is simpler and more disposable than a full bootstrap node.

Good layered approach: your own bootstrap nodes first, cached peers second, BitTorrent DHT as the nuclear fallback.
