Installation on Ubuntu 24.04 Server (Deprecated) (languages: en • zhhiru)

⚠️ DEPRECATED: This installation method is no longer recommended.

We now recommend using Docker for all installations, both on developer machines and servers. Docker provides better isolation, easier management, and consistent environments.

Please use the Docker installation method instead. For Kubernetes deployments, see the Helm installation. For detailed Docker usage, see docs/DOCKER.md.


The following instructions describe the legacy bare-metal installation on Ubuntu 24.04 server. This approach is kept for reference only.

Note: As of issue #1639, the Docker image uses the full konard/box image, pinned to the current Box release, as the base image that provides all development tools. The standalone Hive Mind bare-metal install script was removed from this repository; the last version that pre-installed all Hive Mind tools on top of Ubuntu 24.04 is preserved for historical reference at: https://github.com/link-assistant/hive-mind/blob/4f027b32/scripts/ubuntu-24-server-install.sh

The konard/box image is a universal base image and does not contain Hive Mind specific tooling by itself, so this legacy Hive Mind script is kept as the only remaining source for the bare-metal install path.

Steps

  1. Reset/install VPS/VDS server with fresh Ubuntu 24.04

  2. Login to root user.

  3. Install the Hive Mind toolchain (provides Docker, development tools, and the Hive Mind CLIs)

    # Option 2: Use the legacy Hive Mind bare-metal install script (pinned to the last commit that carried it: 4f027b32)

    Note: The installation does NOT run gh auth login automatically. This is intentional to support Docker builds without timeouts. Authentication is performed in the next steps.

  4. Login to box user

    su - box
  5. IMPORTANT: Authenticate with GitHub CLI AFTER installation is complete

    gh-setup-git-identity

    Note: Follow the prompts to authenticate with your GitHub account. This is required for the gh tool to work, and the system will perform all actions using this GitHub account. This step must be done AFTER the installation script completes to avoid build timeouts in Docker environments.

  6. Claude Code CLI, OpenCode AI CLI, and @link-assistant/agent are preinstalled with the previous script. Now you need to make sure claude is authorized. Execute claude command, and follow all steps to authorize the local claude

    Note: Both opencode and agent come with free Grok Code Fast 1 model by default - so no authorization is required for these tools.

  7. Launch the Hive Mind telegram bot:

    Note: You may need to register you own bot with https://t.me/BotFather to get the bot token.

Codex sign-in

  1. Connect to your instance of VPS with Hive Mind installed, using SSH with tunnel opened

  1. Install or update Codex CLI:
bun install -g @openai/codex@latest
  1. Start the current Codex device auth flow:
codex login --device-auth
  1. Finish login in your browser. The command should end with:
Successfully logged in
  1. Verify the Codex CLI with the same smoke test used in the Docker workflow:
codex exec --model gpt-5.4-mini "hi"

Codex stores its data in ~/.codex on a regular server. The most important paths are:

  • ~/.codex/auth.json
  • ~/.codex/config.toml
  • ~/.codex/sessions/
