- CTL (42-day EWA) = chronic training load / "fitness"
- ATL (7-day EWA) = acute training load / "fatigue"
- TSB = CTL - ATL = "form" (positive = fresh, negative = fatigued)
- Ramp rate = weekly CTL change (>5-7 TSS/day/week = injury risk)
- Limitation: CTL is directionally useful but not a precise predictor. It captures volume, not quality or specificity.
- Aerobic decoupling: Compare EF (NP/HR) first half vs. second half. <5% = sound aerobic fitness. >5% = insufficient base or fatigue.
- Variability Index: NP/AvgPower. Steady rides ~1.02-1.05. Races/crits 1.10-1.50. High VI on endurance rides = poor pacing.
- Compliance: Did the athlete hit prescribed targets? Power accuracy, duration, interval execution.
- Intensity Factor: NP/FTP. Z2 ride should be 0.55-0.75. Threshold work 0.88-1.05. Over 1.05 for extended efforts = likely above FTP.
- Polarized (80/20): ~80% Z1-Z2, ~20% Z4+ (minimal Z3). Best supported for trained athletes.
- Pyramidal: Z1 > Z2 > Z3 (progressive decrease). Natural for high-volume athletes.
- Threshold-heavy: More time in Z3-Z4. Effective short-term but higher fatigue/overtraining risk.
- Assess TID from power histograms over 4-8 week blocks, not individual weeks.
- Progressive overload: Increase load 5-10% per week, deload every 3-4 weeks (reduce volume 40-60%, maintain intensity).
- Block periodization: Focus blocks on one capacity (base, sweet spot, VO2max, race-specific).
- Taper: 8-14 days before target event. Reduce volume 41-60%. Maintain intensity and frequency.
- HRV trend: 7-day rolling average of RMSSD. Suppressed below baseline = reduced readiness.
- Resting HR: Elevated >5 bpm above baseline = warning signal.
- Sleep: Below individual minimums compounds recovery debt.
- Subjective: Mood, fatigue, soreness, motivation — often more sensitive than objective biomarkers.
- TSB: Positive and rising = fresh. Below -20 = significant accumulated fatigue.
