Hi,

I'm currently using Claude 4 (Sonnet) as my selected model in GitHub Copilot Chat, but it seems to be completely unusable. Every time I try to ask a question or interact, I receive the same message:

"I'm sorry but there was an error. Please try again."

This happens consistently, with no successful responses.

What I've already tried:

• Refreshing the page
• Closing and reopening the browser
• Switching to a different internet network

None of these steps fixed the issue.

Additional context:

I've noticed multiple other users reporting the same issue. The common recommendations I’ve found are:

• Switching the model to GPT-4.1
• Restarting the browser
• Opening a support ticket

I’ve already tried restarting the browser (it didn’t help), and I opened a discussion in the forum (assuming it works as a ticket).
However, I don’t want to switch to GPT-4.1 — I specifically want to continue using Claude 4 (Sonnet).

Please let me know if there's a known fix, ongoing investigation, or if I need to do something else on my end. I've attached a screenshot for reference.

This is a known, widespread, and server-side issue affecting Claude 4 Sonnet in GitHub Copilot Chat. There is currently no user-side fix. GitHub and Anthropic are aware and working on a resolution. For now, you may need to temporarily switch models or wait for an official fix

The issue with Claude 4 in GitHub Copilot chat is a known problem that several users are facing. It's likely due to some temporary backend issue or model integration bug on GitHub's side, and no issue on your end, please don't worry!
You just wait it out and GitHub may be working on a fix, and switch to GPT-4 temporarily if you need urgent access.

You're not alone — Claude 4 (Sonnet) in Copilot Chat seems to be having widespread availability or integration issues right now. The "I'm sorry but there was an error" message usually indicates the model isn't returning a valid response from Anthropic’s backend, which could be due to:
API throttling or quota exhaustion on GitHub’s side
Model unavailability in your region or org configuration
Temporary service outage or integration mismatch in Copilot Chat

Since you've already ruled out local issues (browser, network), the best move is to:
File a support ticket if you haven’t already.
Mention you're on Claude 4 (Sonnet) and include any timestamps or request IDs (from console/network tab).
In the meantime, using GPT-4.1 is the only stable workaround if you're blocked.

Until GitHub or Anthropic confirms a fix, Claude may remain unstable in Copilot Chat. Hopefully GitHub updates their Changelog if this is a known service-side incident.

Using Sonnet 3.7 and 4.0 via JetBrains Copilot plugin, and I regularly see "Sorry, an error occurred while generating a response". In fact, in the last day it's become so frequent that I've switched to GPT-5.

It looks like the issue with Claude 4 (Sonnet) in Copilot Chat is happening to multiple users. That error "I'm sorry but there was an error. Please try again." usually means there’s a temporary problem on the service side or with model compatibility.

Things you can try:

Make sure your browser and extensions are up to date.

Try another browser or incognito mode (sometimes cookies/cache cause issues).

If it still doesn’t work, it’s probably a bug on GitHub/Claude’s side, and only they can fix it.

Since you want to stick with Claude 4, the best approach is to monitor forum updates or wait for an official fix.

Since I wrote my last comment, I tried VS Code + Copilot with Claude 4 and it's working properly. I haven't seen a single error from it so far. Yet, when I jump back to the JetBrains plugin, it just falls over time and time again. So I'm not sure what that means - maybe it's just the JetBrains plugin that is broken.

Claude Sonnet is functioning normally for me, but Claude Opus 4.1 exhibits the same problem described here — responses are frequently missing or incomplete, and it still deducts from my quota.
