GitHub Copilot Pro (Student Pack) – Infinite Retry Loop with All Claude Models Crashes VS Code & Wastes Requests

Hi everyone,

I’m using GitHub Copilot Pro via the Student Developer Pack, and I’ve encountered a persistent and critical issue related to Claude agent models in the VS Code Copilot Chat panel.

❗ Issue Summary:

• When using Claude 3.7, Claude 4, or any Claude-based agent mode in Copilot Pro:
  • I initiate a code modification or ask it to refactor something.
  • Claude analyzes and starts applying changes.
  • At around 75–80% progress, an error occurs.
  • A message appears: “Fixing this issue...”, along with a Retry button.
  • Hitting Retry causes the process to loop infinitely.
  • Eventually, VS Code crashes or refreshes itself entirely.

❌ Impact:

• The loop consumes my Copilot Pro request quota, even though the task never finishes.
  

• VS Code becomes unstable and requires a full reload.

• I cannot use Claude models at all within Copilot Pro, even though they are a major advertised feature.

🛠️ What I’ve Already Tried:

• Disabled all other VS Code extensions
• Cleared global storage and Copilot local data
• Reinstalled Copilot extension and VS Code
• Tried on a fresh workspace
• Disabled Claude, then re-enabled it — issue returns
• Reproduced on another machine (same issue)

Thank you for reporting this issue with Claude models in Copilot.

There are similar reports of this issue, including microsoft/vscode#254604, and the problem is currently being triaged by the team.

The infinite retry loop you're experiencing that consumes your quota and causes VS Code instability is concerning and is part of the ongoing investigation.

While this is being addressed, you might try:

• Using GPT models instead of Claude for complex modifications
• Breaking larger requests into smaller chunks
• Using Copilot through GitHub.com rather than VS Code

Just got hit with a quota limit when I made barely 5 requests to agent so far. Seems like a critical bug with API, because I was using zed as IDE, not vscode, but with claude sonnet 4 as an agent (edit mode) and pro subscription. Hope quota will be restored for those who encountered this bug.
