GitHub Student Pack - If student has not institute assigned email address?

Hi everyone,

I hope you all are doing well.
I'm a BS Information Technology student at Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan, Pakistan. I want to avail the GitHub Student Developer Pack, but my university doesn’t provide students with an official institutional email. However, I do have my student ID card.

Can anyone guide me on how I can get the package using my student card?

Great question! You can still apply for the GitHub Student Developer Pack even if your university doesn’t provide an official email address. GitHub gives you two options for verification:

Student ID Card Upload

When applying, you’ll see the option to upload proof of enrollment.

You can use your valid student ID card (make sure your name, photo, and expiration date or current academic year are clearly visible).

If your ID doesn’t have a date, you can also upload an enrollment letter or fee receipt from your university.

Manual Review

If you don’t have an .edu or institutional email, GitHub’s Education Team will manually review your documents.

Just ensure your documents are clear and up to date to avoid delays.

Im also having this error. Im from Aklan State University and they only release asu.edu.ph emails to teachers, not to students. Would really appreciate if someone can provide a workaround. I am only a student.

This is common with many universities in Pakistan and other countries where institutional emails are only given to faculty, not students. You can still get the Student Developer
Pack — here's how:

The error you're seeing

That message means GitHub's database has an email domain requirement flagged for Bahauddin Zakariya University. It thinks you must use a @bzu.edu.pk (or similar) email, but since
your university doesn't issue those to students, you need to get that requirement corrected.

What to do:

1. Report the incorrect school configuration to GitHub. Go to https://support.github.com/contact/education and select:
   - "My selected school has incorrect or incomplete information (e.g., domains or campus location)"
   - Explain that Bahauddin Zakariya University does not issue email addresses to students, only to faculty
   - This tells GitHub to update their database so it stops requiring an institutional email for your school
2. While you wait for that fix, apply using document verification:
   - Use your personal email (Gmail, etc.) on your GitHub account
   - When applying, select your school and choose to upload proof of enrollment
   - Upload your student ID card — make sure your name, photo, university name, and current academic year/expiration are clearly visible
   - If your ID card doesn't show dates, also upload a fee receipt or enrollment letter from the current semester — this has been the most reliable document for approval lately
3. Make sure these are in order before submitting:
   - Your GitHub profile name matches the name on your student ID exactly
   - 2FA is enabled on your account
   - Location services are enabled in your browser (submit from Pakistan, ideally near campus or on university WiFi/VPN)
   - Documents are clear, high-resolution images (convert PDFs to PNG if needed)
4. If your school doesn't appear correctly in the dropdown, type the full official name manually: "Bahauddin Zakariya University" — GitHub will still let you proceed and will do a
   manual review.

@roy-heinrich — same approach applies for Aklan State University. Report to GitHub support that asu.edu.ph emails are faculty-only, and apply with your student ID + fee receipt in
the meantime.

Hi, I'm pretty sure you can get the GitHub student developer pack without an institutional email. The pack is available to any student aged 13 or older in any degree-granting program. If you can't give a school related email, GitHub will just ask for a different form of proof, so you can provide alternative documentation to verify your student status.
Remember that GitHub can check that you're located close to your campus and if your internet provider routes your connection through a different city, it can cause rejection (so I suggest you to apply while you're connected to your campus Wi-Fi).
You can contact GitHub by this link: https://support.github.com/contact select 'GitHub Education' then 'Student Developer pack' and then 'Other', just explain your issue, many students in similar situations get approved after contacting support directly.
