Already posted it on Twitter but would love a third setting where this is only disabled for non-contributors. I like the feature but I do not like random spam on my commits. |

Afaict, the knob exists. In practice, I have thousands of repositories, is there an api to turn it off? In https://github.blog/changelog/2026-03-25-disable-comments-on-individual-commits/

Today, we're introducing a new repository setting that gives admins greater control over commit activity: the ability to disable comments on individual commits.
Commit comments have long been a source of noise for maintainers. Popular repositories, especially those with long commit histories, can attract spam, off-topic questions, and low-quality commentary on commits long after the code has moved on. As open source projects continue to see an increase in low-quality interactions, our goal is to give maintainers better tools to manage their repositories. Disabling commit comments is one step in that direction.
How it works
A new Commits section in your repository's Settings includes the option Allow comments on individual commits, which is enabled by default to preserve existing behavior for all repositories.
When unchecked:
To try it out, navigate to your repository's Settings, scroll to the Commits section, and uncheck Allow comments on individual commits.
You can check out more details in the changelog.
