New computer stopping me from reactivating my student benefits

Hi everyone,

Hi, I am a student and got my education benefits last year. I have since got a new computer and the authenticator is not working so I couldn't relogin to get my copilot set up again on R. I have tried to unlink my email to see if I can set up my education benefits again but it just says that my uni email has already been used to claim the education benefits. I am the same student, same uni email, doing the same degree. Can someone help me reactive it please?

Hi,

you should definitely try to open a ticket with the github support
they have security mesures to stop users from sharing their accounts and student plans,
maybe they can solve your problem.

The "already used" message is expected, it just means the benefits are already attached to your GitHub account. You don't need to reapply, you just need to get your 2FA working again on the new machine.

A few options:

• If you saved your backup codes when you first set up the authenticator, use one to sign in, then go to Settings > Password and authentication and set up a fresh authenticator on the new device.
• If you set up SMS as a backup method, use that to get in.
• If neither of those is available, GitHub Support can help with account recovery. Go to https://support.github.com/contact and choose the option for signing in / account access. You won't need to be signed in to submit the ticket, just verify your email.

Once you're back in, remove the old authenticator entry and re-enroll with your new device. Your student benefits and Copilot access will still be there since the underlying account hasn't changed.
