Copilot Pro Upgrade Option Missing After Failed Payments #198302

Hi @gazirahad7, This is a known and frustrating edge case. Since you've already tackled the standard troubleshooting (incognito mode, logging out, checking settings), your account is likely stuck in "entitlement limbo." When a Copilot subscription lapses and fully downgrades to Free due to consecutive payment failures, GitHub's billing backend sometimes fails to properly reset your account state. The system recognises you as a "current" user, but the billing flag preventing access hasn't cleared, which completely hides the upgrade UI. Here are a few ways to bypass the UI bug or get it fixed: 1. Force the Direct Checkout RoutesSometimes the frontend hides the button, but the backend checkout routes are still active. Try navigating directly to these URLs while logged in:
2. The Payment Method ResetIf your old payment method had a lingering failed authorisation hook, it might keep your account locked in a failed state.
3. Escalate to GitHub Support (Most Likely Fix)If the direct links redirect you back to the Copilot Free dashboard and the payment reset doesn't work, this confirms a server-side flag is stuck. You aren't experiencing a temporary restriction; GitHub Support needs to manually flush the old subscription state.
Billing tickets are usually prioritised, so they should be able to flip the switch for you relatively quickly. Hope this gets you unblocked soon! |

Hi @gazirahad7, Since you have already tried the direct Copilot links, updated/re-added your payment method, checked billing settings, used incognito mode, and logged out and back in, this is most likely not something you can fix from the UI. At this point, it sounds like your Copilot subscription state may be stuck on GitHub’s backend after the failed renewals and downgrade to Copilot Free. Since you only have one card available, I would recommend opening a GitHub Support ticket and asking them to manually refresh or reset your Copilot billing/subscription eligibility. You can include this message in the ticket: “My Copilot Pro subscription renewal failed a few times, and my account was downgraded to Copilot Free. I have updated/re-added my payment method, tried direct Copilot upgrade links, used incognito mode, logged out and back in, and checked my billing and Copilot settings. However, the option to upgrade or resubscribe to Copilot Pro is still completely missing. I only have one card available, so I cannot test with a different card. Please manually check and refresh/reset my Copilot subscription eligibility.” This looks like a backend billing state issue, so GitHub Support is likely the best next step now. |

seems like they are not able to cop up with increasing compute demand and stopped getting more subscriptions for the time being, because I am also not able to see upgrade button or payment button anywhere, although I have not encountered the above issues |

Copilot in GitHub
Body
Hi everyone,
I’m having an issue with my GitHub Copilot Pro subscription.
My payment renewal was declined a few times, and after that my account was downgraded to Copilot Free. Now I no longer see the option to upgrade back to Copilot Pro anywhere in my account.
I already tried:
But the “Upgrade to Pro” button is completely missing.
Has anyone experienced this before? Is this a temporary billing restriction, or does GitHub Support need to manually refresh the account/subscription eligibility?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
