simple-firebase-notifications

Get Started

  1. Clone this repo
  2. npm install
  3. Fill in your firebase keys in:
  • firebase-messaging-sw.js
  • notification.js
  1. node server.js
  2. Open your browser to localhost:3000
  3. Upon opening your browser, the service worker should have installed and automatically sent your browser token to the server. You will need the token to send notifications to your browser (limited browser support, see limitations below)

Sending Notifications

  1. curl from your terminal:

  • make sure to enter your firebase authorization key (your server key) in the field of 'Authorization: key=' and your browser token in the 'to' field (don't include the [])
  • to ensure your data is passed through correctly, ensure your body looks like:

Limitations

According to Firebase documentation: The FCM JavaScript API lets you receive notification messages in web apps running in these browsers:

  • Chrome: 50+
  • Firefox: 44+
  • Opera Mobile: 37+
