Overview

Phase 42 builds the distributed systems layer for ASI-Build, enabling fault-tolerant, scalable AI infrastructure that can operate across multiple nodes with strong consistency guarantees. This phase draws from decades of distributed systems research to create a robust foundation for large-scale AI deployment.

Building on Phase 41's adversarial robustness (issues #825–#829), we now tackle the fundamental challenges of distributed computing: consensus, sharding, fault detection, checkpointing, and orchestration.

Key Design Decisions

1. Consensus Protocol Selection: Raft as primary (understandability), with PBFT extension for Byzantine environments
2. Sharding Strategy: Support data parallelism, model parallelism (tensor + pipeline), and ZeRO-style optimizer state partitioning
3. Failure Detection: φ-accrual failure detector (Hayashibara et al.) for adaptive suspicion levels rather than binary alive/dead
4. Checkpointing: Chandy-Lamport algorithm for consistent distributed snapshots without stopping computation
5. Orchestration: Borg-inspired scheduling with bin-packing, priority queues, and preemption
