Research: Distributed intelligence without autonomous authority

Hi Yggdrasil devs,

I’m an independent researcher working on architectures for distributed systems and AI safety.
I recently published a paper that may be conceptually relevant to decentralized / coordinator-free network substrates like Yggdrasil:

The core idea is to separate distributed intelligence from delegated authority:
intelligence can be scalable, decentralized, and network-native, while authority remains explicitly constrained and human-anchored at the architectural level.

This is not an “agentic AI over P2P” proposal. The work focuses on:

• non-agentic distributed reasoning,
• architectural limits on autonomy / authority,
• design patterns compatible with trustless, decentralized substrates.

For broader context, this paper is part of a larger research line that also includes:

• Architectural Limits of Autonomy — a theoretical work on structural limits of autonomy and architectural safety,
• DHI: Distributed Hybrid Neural Inference — a more technical architecture for decentralized inference and training.

I’m sharing this as research context, not as a feature request or integration proposal.
That said, I would be glad to hear any feedback, comments, or perspectives if someone finds the ideas relevant.

Thank you for your work on Yggdrasil — it’s one of the few projects that treats decentralization as a first-class architectural principle.

I don't see the relationship AI could possibly have with a routing protocol, am I missing something?

That’s a fair question. The connection isn’t obvious if AI is viewed as a centralized model or a “chatbot.”
It becomes relevant only when AI is treated as a distributed inference process, not as a single execution point.

This is the perspective taken in my works:

“DHI: Distributed Hybrid Neural Inference” — which introduces distributed, heterogeneous inference as a computational substrate

“Architectural Limits of Autonomy” — which formalizes structural limits on autonomous execution (Law 0, AIC classes)

“Distributed Intelligence without Autonomous Authority” — which combines DHI and ALA into a non-agentic, advisory architecture

Within this framework, routing is not used in the classical networking sense (BGP, OSPF, etc.). It is used as a computational and architectural mechanism.

The key ideas are:

1. Routing as inference coordination (DHI)
   In Distributed Hybrid Inference, inference is decomposed and executed across heterogeneous nodes. Routing determines:

which parts of inference run where,

how redundancy and validation paths are introduced,

how failures, delays, or partial trust are handled.

At this level, routing becomes part of the execution semantics of inference, not just data transport.

2. Routing as a structural authority barrier (Architectural Limits of Autonomy)
   In Architectural Limits of Autonomy, the core claim is that most safety failures arise from implicit authority emergence, not from insufficient intelligence.
   Routing is therefore used as a structurally enforced boundary between inference and execution.
   No inference result can directly initiate irreversible actions (AIC-1) — not by policy or alignment, but because such paths are architecturally absent without explicit human authorization (Law 0).

3. Preventing authority concentration (Distributed Intelligence without Autonomous Authority)
   The distributed routing of inference preserves plurality, disagreement, and partial context. This prevents the system from collapsing into a single authoritative decision-maker and keeps it strictly advisory by design, even at high levels of intelligence.

About Yggdrasil
Yggdrasil (or similar encrypted P2P overlay networks) can serve as a practical communication substrate for Distributed Hybrid Inference.
Importantly, the architecture does not rely on any network properties for safety or authority control.
Routing, autonomy limits, and responsibility boundaries are enforced architecturally above the network layer.
Yggdrasil is suitable precisely because it does not introduce coordination, consensus, or execution authority of its own.

In short:
routing here is not about moving packets faster — it is about controlling how intelligence is distributed, constrained, and prevented from becoming autonomous.
