All :Example: converted to doctest. Minor formatting of Canvas.py. Updated lots of xmldocs to facilitate docstring tests.
Most doctests passing. Some fail due to implementation errorsi/bugs.

This is to address issues in the review of PR #3 , and supersedes #3.
