Not working, no shortcuts created

Moto Z Play, Android 8.0, stock/unrooted, Nova launcher in case it matters. Just downloaded this a while ago and have been messing around with it, but I can't get it to actually do anything. Clicking the star resulted in a message that a quick setting had been created, but I couldn't find anything from that. Clicking save said a shortcut had been created but, again, nothing. I tried a couple times. Based on some of the reviews, it appears I'm not alone, though I'm not sure if I'm just doing something wrong or if it's not working. It hasn't been updated in a year, so maybe it's not compatible with O.

I still don't know if it's supposed to actually create shortcuts that can be used to launch two apps in split-screen, but I did get it sort of working using Automagic. There are a few problems, though:

1. When clicking the button to choose an app, there's a fairly long delay before it opens the app list. The problem is that it makes you think it's lagging, so you're tempted to tap the button again. And if you do, after the list opens and you choose an app, it reopens, and you have to choose it again. And if you make the mistake I did, which is to think the second one is for the second app, you'll have to go back a third time and reselect the first app.
2. When selecting an app, it would be extremely helpful if there was a scroll bar you could drag to scroll through the list quicker and/or a search feature.
3. I set it up with Waze as the first app and Pulsar as the second, thinking it would open Waze at the top and Pulsar at the bottom, but it did the opposite, which makes no sense. So I switched them around, and now it won't even open them in split-screen at all (nothing else changed). It goes through a couple instances of split-screen, but just ends up with either Waze or, most often, Pulsar open full-screen. Every once in a while Waze will end up open on the bottom half, with nothing on the top half, but that's only occurred maybe twice out of probably 20+ tries.

I used to have a android 7 phone, where this app worked perfectly.
After switching to android 9 it doesn't anymore (sadly).
The links are now created as a sub-widget of the Screens icon. So creating the widgets doesn't seem to work at first sight.
But even after figuring that out, the configuration for two apps barely works. It seems that the first app is correctly started and then I have to manually select the second one.

Screens is basically abandonware at this point, and as since Android killed the shortcuts api the app has had real trouble... I did consider trying to work around the new shortcuts api limitation but with my past experience of working around Android apis (forcing spilt screen). I now have no intention of fighting Android anymore, this should all be implemented in the Android frameworks.

That being said, PRs and forks are welcome.

not working for me either (Android 11 R) i was so excited to see that MS' feature of such shortcuts in its own android device is already available for android, but google is shit
