I believe the difference is the i965 driver is “archived” (which I personally don’t use) but is needed for the legacy intel cards.

@heitbaum you are right, the archived one by intel support older hardware that is not supported in the intel-media-driver.

@chewitt they also advise to fork if intel-vaapi-driver is need, and is needed for older hardware.

I think if it doesn't need too much effort it could be interesting to maintain it, but if it gives troubles in the long time I'm not sure taking into account that the dropped hardware doesn't support recent codecs.
