The blocking identification algorithm is a culmination of multiple metrics which allow for the detection of quasi-stationary blocking events that evolve over space and time. Blocked points are identified using 500 hPa geopotential height through an altered form of the blocking detection method from Tibaldi and Molteni, 1990, along with additional filtering metrics. Blocked points are then stitched together into blocking events using StitchBlobs from TempestExtremes, before being filtered by maximum size. The local wave activity (LWA) of each block is then calculated and an associated flow type (dipole, ridge, or cutoff low from Liu and Wang, 2025) is assigned. Finally, non-blocks (Tibetan, Asian Monsoon, and cutoff lows) are filtered out of the dataset. The result is a NetCDF file and associated CSV file containing information about blocking events identified throughout a specified time range.
