It seems the default that works with GeoServer for the schema files is schema.xsd but that isn't very good in terms of ensuring files don't get confused. Right now that is handled by keeping each schema file in a folder that matches the layer name. However, would be better if the schema files themselves could have unique names that also match the layer.
