PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

A clear and concise description of what the problem is.

Multiple devices running Tasmota 15.3.0.3 intermittently crash and reboot with Exception 29 after some uptime. The issue appears across different devices and configurations, suggesting it is not tied to a single hardware setup.

The problem does not occur immediately after boot but after the devices have been running for some time. Boot counters increase accordingly, confirming repeated unexpected restarts.

Considering the rapid decrease of heap space starting at 10:19:04 I suspect the same issue as before; PiHole DHCP serving NTP in a way that Tasmota/Core/SDK doesn't like.

Try to disable this and see what happens.

I can also imagine that this might be related to DHCP/NTP. However, I don’t yet have a complete understanding of Tasmota and how it interacts with Arduino and lwIP. My current impression is that there may be a race condition, or that the issue has only been resolved for stable network connections. I suspect this because the k-kitchen-wlight (Sonoff Basic) has a rather poor Wi-Fi connection. And it's not happening for other devices since I've updated to Tasmota 15.3.0.3. Only 3 of 22 have been affected so far.

I’ve been trying to better understand the potential call sequence and why RtcSetTimeOfDay() appears to have fixed the issue in most cases.

But I do not like workarounds and therefore I would like to understand whether it’s possible to completely disable DHCP/SNTP support in lwIP, since it seems we don’t actually intend to use it. I haven’t been able to find a solid approach for doing this, likely because I’m not very familiar with development in this area.

It appears there may be a global option, LWIP_DHCP_GET_NTP_SR, that could disable this behavior.

There is also an ESP32-to-ESP8266-compat layer that provides the sntp_set_timezone() function.

I’m not entirely sure whether this is related or part of the same issue.

At the moment, my best guess is that when a connection loss occurs, the system re-queries DHCP for a lease renewal, which in turn triggers sntp_init() again. Since Tasmota’s RTC still considers itself synchronized, it doesn’t stop or release the request. Over time, if multiple connection losses occur, this behavior could lead to heap exhaustion.

Thx for the indepth analyses. The problem lies within the SDK. A binary blob that, when DHCP is enabled always asks for IP address, Gateway, DNS and NTP. So there is no way to not ask for NTP.

That's why I disable sntp as soon as possible when it is started by Arduino Core. That happens when settimeofday(&tv, nullptr); is executed. That in turn is needed for Arduino Core's LittleFS file timestamp that in turn gets its timestamp for Core timing.

You may well be right that there are more places where settimeofday(&tv, nullptr); is executed which in turn starts SDK sntp.

That call didn't work but by adding the the sntp_stop() we may have more luck. I'll re-enable it it.

So as we both hate workarounds we have to settle with it as long as we keep using the current SDK which is found the most stable of all available SDK's.

I’m testing my own fix first, but I needed to understand how frequently the issue occurs. To do that, I’ve updated the device that seems to be affected most often.

I’ll share an update here once I have more data, and I’ll also report back on your proposed fix. However, I suspect that running it every minute might only slow down the heap exhaustion. But I’m willing to dig deeper into this to find a proper solution. Thanks for your help so far, I really appreciate it!

I've been having the same problem for a while now with a Vindri sensor from IKEA. Without the IKEA sensor, it works fine using a Pi-hole DNS address. But as soon as the IKEA sensor is connected, I get Watchdog, Exception 29, etc. errors, and it only runs for about 3 hours. After using the minimal bin and compilation from the IKEA sensor, it ran for almost 24 hours. After changing the DNS address in Tasmota, it's been running for 1 day, 2 hours, and 20 minutes so far. I think the ESP crashes under high load in conjunction with Pi-hole.

Hey @arendst, I’ve been experimenting with a few ideas.

Initially, I though about disabling sntp_init/sntp_stop by effectively turning them into NOPs (making the first instruction just return). But that approach evolved once I started looking into what we can do at link time.

My first attempt there was to override them with strong symbols combined with -Wl,--allow-multiple-definition, but that didn’t feel robust enough. So I switched to using linker wrapping via -Wl,--wrap=sntp_init,--wrap=sntp_stop, which seems much cleaner.

I’ve also removed any direct calls to sntp_init/sntp_stop from the code.

The output now looks like this:

By the way, I took a look at the firmware.elf and traced where sntp_init is being called. It seems there’s only a single call in netif_sta_status_callback.

So with this approach, it looks like I’m covering both cases and effectively preventing the internal lwIP SNTP usage.

The SNTP patch is functioning as expected and has already intercepted 5 autonomous calls to lwIP SNTP, confirming the root cause. The observed increase in boot count appears to be unrelated. It is likely caused by Tasmota's built-in WiFi watchdog triggering automatic restarts due to poor signal quality. I will clean up the code and submit a pull request.
