I still would like to see a mechanism that prevents attempting to query this column until the background update has concluded.
However... how to actually implement that is another question. I don't have a good answer for that. If you don't either, then I suppose this works for now.

Thanks! I think this is the best we can do. It will add an extra query to each media download, but at least we have short-circuits when all background updates are completed, and if the currently running update is the mentioned one.
