Contributing to OSM

Why maintain a separate database rather than just making this a custom OSM frontend, since free wifi can easily be tagged within OSM as well?

There are a lot of public acccess points mapped in OSM (overpass-turbo query for "internet_access=wlan"). At least showing these on openwifimap would be an improvement (especially outside Germany).
