This PR continues the work started in PR #523
I downloaded the patch file from the PR and applied it locally using
git apply.From there, I completed and adjusted the changes to ensure they integrate cleanly with the current codebase.

Original implementation credit goes to the author of PR #523.
This PR finalizes and adapts their work to match the current state of the repository.
