Subject: GitHub Student Developer Pack – Reached Copilot Chat Limit Early

Dear GitHub Support Team,

I hope you're doing well.

I'm a student currently using the GitHub Student Developer Pack, and I’ve been actively using GitHub Copilot — particularly the Copilot Chat feature — to support my learning and development projects. Recently, I received a message saying:

“You’ve reached your monthly chat messages limit. Upgrade to Copilot Pro (30-day free trial) or wait until May 7, 2025 for your limit to reset.”

I understand that Copilot Chat may have message limits, but I was under the impression that the Student Developer Pack would allow more generous or unrestricted usage, especially for educational purposes. Additionally, I know some of my peers using the same Student Pack haven’t encountered this restriction, even with similar or greater usage.

Could you please clarify:

What the current chat message limit is for Student Developer Pack users?

Why this limit might be applying to me but not to others with similar access?

Whether there’s any way to extend or reset the limit earlier for educational needs?

I truly appreciate GitHub’s support for students, and Copilot has been a valuable learning tool. Any help or clarification would mean a lot.

With the free version, you have access to 50 requests per month.
This limit applies to everyone with the same access level. If others haven't reached the limit, they might be using the free trial of copilot pro wich offers a unlimited quota.

There is no way to reset the limit earlier, unless you upgrade to the pro version or activate the 30days free trial.

I have found that, copilot regardless of your student dev account imposes a limit on free chats. So you have to wait another renew date if you really want to avail the access. Nevertheless code completion is limitless and will continue as it is.
I for myself have now resorted to 'windsurf' as it offers really competent chat/completion services that too free of cost and for lifetime. You won't regret switching to it. Plus, it being a ide just like vs code you can sync repo smoothly across different platforms.

thanks @Akshat005Chaudhary unfortunately it seems that both windsurf and cursor only provide their student plans to US students with email ending on .edu, not a big help on their part.

Well I'm from India and I use windsurf heavily for free and I don't see a reason why they have would have restricted the access in Ireland. I would insist you try harder.
