Home dashboard update [Public preview feedback]

We made improvements to the content and layout of the home dashboard, designed to enable users to see, understand, and take action on their most important work in a single view. The default view of the home dashboard now displays short, customizable lists of recent agent tasks, pull requests, and issues. The feed view has moved to its own page at github.com/feed when the preview is enabled.

You can access the dashboard update by enabling New Dashboard Experience in Feature preview.

What's new

• A new agent module shows the status of all your agent tasks and provides links to the task session.
• Pull request and issue modules list your most recent pull requests and issues for quick navigation to your in-progress work. Each module has filtering options to customize the lists.
• The new Feed tab is the new home for the feed. It can also be found at github.com/feed. The feed's content and filters have not changed. When using the site on a mobile device, you can find a link to the feed in the hamburger navigation.
• We've applied fresh visual and UI updates to the dashboard.
• Action menus enable you to kick-off your work from any of the new modules. You can assign issues to Copilot coding agent or open pull requests and issues in Copilot Chat as references, with more shortcuts to come.

I like the new homepage, I missed when it was first removed! 😄

1. I think we should be able to sort the rows, I mean "Agent sessions", "Pull requests" and "Issues".
2. The repositories on the left is a duplicate of the repositories in the hamburger menu. I think the one in the hamburger menu should be removed.
3. Add extra / commands. I think it is missing a "spaces" slash which would use a specific space as a context.
   4. Add the ability to see the old feed somewhere. It is quite useful to track releases or new first issues of stared repositories for example. It is available in the top left corner. I am just blind! 🙈

As someone who has an account specifically for an organization, organization-specific HOME pages could absolutely be something I could get behind.

I would definitely support the idea of custom home pages for each organization. This feature would help tailor the experience, surface more relevant information, and make navigation much more efficient across teams and projects. It would be a valuable improvement for users who collaborate with multiple organizations.

The Copilot visibility setting doesn't exist on my account either. I also have a forced Pro subscription.

A few thoughts:

• I have a PR from 2016 which appears in the list (and the most recent activity dates from 2020), that's not exactly what I'd call recent. 😅
• The list items have excessively large paddings, I'd prefer a (much) more compact view.
• Sometimes the conversation continues in closed issues/PRs. It would be nice to continue showing them for some time after they're closed.
• I don't care about agent sessions, so I unchecked both the "open" and "closed" filters, but the list still shows and takes precious space on top of the page.
• An option to view the feed below the lists would be nice.

The PR from 2016 – that's weird. The pull request and issues lists are ordered by last updated. The item with the newest update will be at the top. So there may have been a recent update (maybe a comment, change in assignment, label?) If it's still not clear, let me know we can connect and figure out what's going on.

Also take a look at the filters, that might help you narrow down your results to your liking.

I mean, the previous "recent activity" feature (which showed in the left margin of the homepage, under "repositories") limited the view to issues/PRs which were active in the last 2 weeks. Then, they were removed.

Currently, I have 4 PRs open: 2 recent ones, and 2 very old ones. https://github.com/pulls shows the following:

Note the old PRs are both in the list. I left comments/reviews on the additional ones that are added in comparison to github.com/pulls. Only the top 2 are recent.

I know about the filters, but I definitely want the PRs I authored in the list. 🙂

Even setting notifications on those ancient repos to ignore does not remove them from the dashboard.

Got it. I'm assuming that means issues or PRs that aren't really relevant to you but might still be open. Would you want to hide them permanently or until there's new activity?

Also take a look at the filters, that might help you narrow down your results to your liking.

Creating an issue from the home page feels ass backwards

There are a few different ways to create an issue from the dashboard. Are you talking about using the /create-issue command in the Copilot input?

There are some longstanding issues that I watch, but don't want to be at the top of my feed.

Got it. That issue is at the top because it was updated last week it looks like, and the issues are ordered by latest update. Would you want to do something like snooze or hide that issue?

Also, I notice you aren't assigned to that issue. If you turn off the "Involves me" filter and just use the "Assigned to me" filter that might work better for you.

Why does this appear on hover? Hover is terrible UX for touch inputs. Make it a menu or something always there. I don't want to accidentally click this.

Thanks for the reply! The menu looks good. Why not make this default for desktop too? Desktops have more space so I don't see a reason to hide it behind a hover action.

Also the copilot icon appearing in middle of two PRs might not be ideal.

@justinbyo can you please confirm that you understood @davecom's request for an option to select which home-view is the default? I imagine the 20 negative-reactions you've received are because you sound entirely-dismissive of this simple request.

The new dash-board seems extremely high-value for people working at big-corporations like you, who probably work on multiple organizations; projects; and issues concurrently or whose tasks change quickly. For others like me, my work-flow is pretty streamlined and doesn't use this site as ground-zero for mission-control; priorities; communication...

As-such the new dash-board's value is nearly-zero for me. I don't need a helper to keep-track of issues and PRs because when I do use those, I can easily manage them in my head or using the site's tools that have existed for so many years now.

OTOH the feed-view is very high-value for me because it allows me to stay up-dated with the tools and libraries I actively-use daily. A change-log with a new library-feature can change the way I approach a task that very-day or I may want to update my tool-chain with new-releases as soon as I'm aware of them for bug-fixes and security-updates.

Having the old-feed still-available is great for that reason and thank you for reassuring-us that it's still there but the extra-friction to get there is a significant UI and UX concern for those of us for-whom the new dash-board doesn't aggregate actionable-value.

Having the option to select a default-view for the home-page would be an objective improvement, especially for those like-me who doesn't have GH's home as their book-marked landing-page on the site, requiring multiple-steps now to get to the feed when it was just one-click away before.

Having the feed included as a section on the new dash-board, especially given the ability to rearrange the order in which sections are shown; or persistently collapsed and expanded sections would also be a great solution!

Echoing this request, I'm someone that doesn't do a lot with Issues and PRs so my "Home" shows one PR from 2017 and three issues that are not especially important to me. I have no Agent or AI/chat showing so the new Home is of really low value to me and mostly empty. Either integrate the Feed or make it an option to set as the default.

There's an option for the chat box, but it's completely buried in the settings: go to copilot features and disable the "Dashboard entry point" setting.

Right, you can disable the chatbox from github.com/settings/copilot. But it sounds like github.com/feed gives you precisely the view you're looking for: the feed without the chat input, without any change in settings.

I actually do like the issues/PRs/etc. view, would be a lot more comfortable to use if the feed was directly underneath it

Please stop wasting seemingly most resources on force-feeding AI into every corner of the platform while leaving more and more mayor issues unaddressed in the core areas of code viewing and reviewing + work, release and dependency management.
Python support in dependabot is a joke, it seems like barely anyone works on that anymore. Same for deployments.

Your focus on AI-only is showing and motivating me to actively rally against moving my org from Azure Devops to GHE. This platform is more and more losing its appeal. At this point one might as well switch ones enterprise to GitLab, at least they let you disable AI more effectively.

Just give the people what they want...on GitHub people want to add a new repository or to see their repositories by favourites then by most recently updated...is it that hard to fix?!? I have an item in Pull Requests (MDEwOlJlcG9zaXRvcnkxOTY0MzI0MDM= + PR_kwDOC7VSE86IiZTl) on my home screen, it's listed as "Updated yesterday", and the
gh api https://api.github.com/repos/:OWNER/:REPO/pulls/:NUMBER agrees that "updated_at" is yesterday.

Afaict, the only thing that's been updated on that PR is the commit for the base branch (which changes each time anyone else merges into the base branch). That isn't a "PR" that has been "updated", it's a repository that isn't dead.

I've tried it for a couple of months, but I just disabled it and come back to the previous dashboard/feed, which is much more useful for me. I don't really see the value of having a list of agent sessions and updated PRs 🤔, the old feed provides much more info about the "community". I'd make this as a secondary or alternative version, but the Home should be the feed IMO.

Or even better:

• mix both pages into one by adding the AI stuff in smaller boxes before the feed
• move this info inside a dropdown triggered by the Copilot icon in the top menu

I find myself constantly visiting the /feed page manually after enabling this new dashboard, thinking this boils down to me always expecting the "dashboard" i visit to be the "here is new coolthings to explore and discover", rather than "I must see my work items!".

I seem to remember that some time ago, the dashboard took into account the last tab opened (home, feed). If I was on the feed tab when I reopened GitHub, that tab would open automatically. Now, however, it no longer takes this into account. For me, the new dashboard is perfect for those who actively develop on GitHub, but less so for those who want to keep up to date with the repositories they follow and/or discover new repositories. Reintroducing the automatic opening of the last tab opened would be great.

No idea where to post this, but I noticed I'm getting weird vowels being strangely replaced in branch names (e.g. master becomes mnstvr), this only happens with this new feature enabled when I browse github anonymously I don't have that issue
