We need some pre-release tests that are more automated and comprehensive than the manual steps highlighted in RELEASE.md
In particular, all our e2e tests compile the builder from source. We need to same tests using the pre-built binary as pre-release test. We may need a set of different repos that mirror the repos, but where we can update release/assets at will for tests.
