@worldresources/wri-design-systems

WRI UI Library

Requirements

Node: 22.14.0

React: 19.0.1

Installation

yarn add @worldresources/wri-design-systems

or

npm i @worldresources/wri-design-systems

Other dependecies

yarn add @chakra-ui/react @emotion/react

or

npm i @chakra-ui/react @emotion/react

Usage

Set up AI tooling

Run the DS CLI to set up AI tooling for this design system in your project root (the directory where you run the command).

For the full setup guide see docs/ai-tooling.md.

ds setup-ai

This will:

  • Configure IDE integrations when detected:
    • Cursor: writes .cursor/rules and creates .cursor/mcp.json (skips if it already exists)
    • VS Code / GitHub Copilot: writes .github/copilot-instructions.md, .github/instructions/wri-ds.instructions.md (if available), and creates .vscode/mcp.json (skips if it already exists)
    • Windsurf: writes .windsurfrules
    • Cline: writes .clinerules
  • Automatically install helper skills:
    • Copies the ds-ui-creator skill into .gemini/skills/ds-ui-creator and .claude/skills/ds-ui-creator
  • Ensure a .gitignore block is present (creates .gitignore if missing; appends once and never duplicates):
    • .windsurfrules
    • .clinerules
    • .github/copilot-instructions.md
    • .github/instructions/wri-ds.instructions.md
    • .cursor/rules
    • .cursor/mcp.json
    • .vscode/mcp.json

Optional: run it against a specific path:

ds setup-ai /path/to/your/project

Available Skills

Copy the SKILL.md file you want into the matching skills folder in your own project:

  • Skills repo path: agents/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md
  • Copy the folder into the agent-specific skills directory your project uses.
Skill What it does
a11y-checker Reviews components, stories, and docs for accessibility issues and suggests or applies fixes.
ds-ui-creator Guides UI creation with the WRI Design System first, Chakra UI second, and custom code last.
pr-description Generates a PR description from the branch diff in a consistent markdown format.

Create the Project Theme

With this custom theme you can change the color scheme according to your Project Theme

import { createSystem, defaultConfig } from '@chakra-ui/react'
import { designSystemStyles } from '@worldresources/wri-design-systems'

export const system = createSystem(designSystemStyles._config, {

PR Label Rules

Use exactly one versioning label on every contributor PR. The label drives the npm version bump workflow when the PR is merged into main.

How it works

  • Open a PR and add one of the labels below.
  • The PR Label Guard workflow enforces that exactly one label is present.
  • On merge, the Release & Publish workflow opens an automated release PR with labels:
    • auto-release
    • the same bump label from the merged PR (major, minor, or patch)
  • Merge that release PR to trigger tag creation, npm publish, and GitHub release notes.
  • no-bump skips all versioning and publishing.
  • PR checks (test, lint, pr-label-check) are skipped for PRs labeled auto-release.

Label guide

  • patch: non-breaking fixes (styles, internal refactors, Storybook-only tweaks that do not change usage)
  • minor: backwards-compatible feature or API additions (new component/prop), or behavior changes that may affect usage but are not breaking
  • major: breaking changes (removed/renamed props, changed required behavior, incompatible defaults)
  • no-bump: documentation-only or internal changes that should not publish
  • auto-release: internal automation label for generated release PRs (do not use manually on regular PRs)

If you are unsure, choose minor and leave a note in the PR for review.

PR Description With AI Skill

To get a solid PR description quickly, use the pr-description skill in your AI-enabled editor.

  1. Ensure your branch is up to date and run: git diff main...HEAD
  2. Ask the assistant to use pr-description and summarize the current PR changes. Or ask "create a PR description for my changes"
  3. Paste the generated result into the PR description using this structure: ## What, ## Why, ## Changes.
