retagging stile leaves stile= tag behind

How to reproduce the issue?

1. select vertex within footway
2. select stile from feature list (barrier=stile gets applied)
3. select its type in iD interface (stile= gets applied)
4. select gate from feature list (barrier=gate gets applied, stile= remains behind - it should have been removed)

number is quite low but it is result of ongoing cleanup, I also opened many notes like https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/4832435

problem is more general, see say "retagging amenity=restaurant with cuisine=obscure_value leaves cuisine #11037"

Isn't this a duplicate of #11037 ?
Did you look into how the removeTags in the schema works? Some of those issues might be just a miss-configuration of the id-tagging-schema.

I just did and become enlightened. Opened openstreetmap/id-tagging-schema#1621 but I need to test it.

The thing with this setup it: It has only one set of rules. But IMO we want different rules based on the kind of change of preset we perform. Changing from one barrier to another, should IMO preserve as many fields as possible. Eg. the material should be the same, just the barrier-value changes. However in other cases, we want to remove tags.

One indicator could be, that the tag has a field in the current preset but not in the target preset. Because if it had a field, users could easily revalidate. But if not, the tag would become hidden in the "Tags" section. Unfortunately I don't think we can write this in code…

not really, at least here: if stile was turned into gate it is highly dubious that original material still applies
