Planning
The planning process for your project can be as meticulous as you like. The first vacuum cleaner I built was extremely well thought out, however there were mistakes, by contrast the second was completely done on off the cuff and actually works, and is pretty good.
The plan for the first design was mostly mental with a few CAD drawings, while the plan for the second design looked like this:
