This pull request strengthens the validation of AES encryption parameters, particularly the initialization vector (IV) size, across encryption and decryption functions. It introduces explicit checks and validation methods to prevent cryptographic misuse and improve code safety. The most important changes are grouped below.

AES IV Size Validation

  • Added explicit checks to ensure the IV size matches AES_BLOCK_SIZE in all AES CBC and CTR encryption/decryption functions in Encrypt.cpp, throwing an exception if the size is invalid. [1] [2] [3] [4]

AES Parameters Validation

  • Introduced an isValid() method to the AESParameters struct in AESParameters.h to validate the IV size against the block size.
  • Updated the EncryptedPayload constructor in EncryptionParameters.cpp to use AESParameters::isValid() and throw an exception if the cipher parameters are invalid.
  • Added assertions and double-checks for IV size and parameter validity in the encryption and decryption logic of EncryptedPayload, ensuring correctness even in debug builds. [1] [2]

Pull request overview

This pull request adds comprehensive IV (Initialization Vector) size validation to AES encryption and decryption operations to prevent cryptographic misuse. The changes introduce validation at multiple layers: in the low-level encryption functions, in the AES parameters structure, and in the high-level encryption payload handling.

Key Changes:

  • Added an isValid() method to AESParameters struct to validate IV size matches the AES block size (16 bytes)
  • Implemented explicit IV size checks in all four AES encryption/decryption functions (CBC and CTR modes)
  • Enhanced EncryptedPayload constructor and decrypt method with parameter validation and defensive assertions

Reviewed changes

Copilot reviewed 3 out of 3 changed files in this pull request and generated 3 comments.

File Description
src/Keystore/AESParameters.h Added isValid() method to validate IV size and removed extra semicolon from function declaration
src/Encrypt.cpp Added IV size validation checks to all four AES functions (CBC/CTR encrypt/decrypt) with consistent error messages
src/Keystore/EncryptionParameters.cpp Added cipher parameter validation in constructor, added validation and assertions in decrypt method with explanatory comments
